About Our Proton Beam Treatment Centre in London

At UCLH, there are four Varian ProBeam™ treatment rooms, each with a gantry used to deliver proton beam therapy. Proton International London uses one of these for private patients.

At UCLH, there is a pre-treatment suite where preparation for the PBT treatment starts, located on basement level 4. It has CT and MRI scanners, and is where you or your child will have the scans required to plan your treatment. There is also a dedicated anaesthetics suite for young patients who require a general anaesthetic for the planning and delivery of proton beam therapy. The suite consists of induction rooms and recovery areas

Side Effects of Proton Beam Therapy

Proton therapy side effects are similar to those of other traditional radiation therapies. The side effects you experience will depend on the area of your body being treated and what normal tissue structures or organs are close by, the dose of proton beam therapy you have and what other treatments you are having, such as chemotherapy.

Side effects of radiation therapy can develop gradually during treatment and may include:

– Skin reactions, sore, reddened skin in the area where the proton beam entered the body. It can look and feel like a sunburn. Skin reactions can sometimes be worse with proton beam therapy than with standard radiotherapy.

– Hair loss in the treatment area

– Tiredness or low energy

– Sore mouth and throat, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing for treatments in the head and neck area

These side effects develop during treatment and will be worst in the final week. They will continue for a week after treatment has finished, and then start to improve, typically resolving by 4 to 6 weeks post-treatment.

Additional side effects, depending on the area treated, may include headaches, nausea, diarrohea, and other issues. You will be closely monitored by the therapy radiographers and our clinical review team throughout the treatment to assess and manage any side effects.

How to get cancer treatment with Proton International London

To assess your suitability for treatment, our team requires specific medical information regarding your cancer/tumour diagnosis. Our dedicated Patient Services Manager will guide you on the details we need. Typically, we request your medical reports and history and imaging scans, such as MRI, CT, or PET scans. These scans can usually be obtained from your hospital or clinic and are often provided on a CD, or transferred electronically.

If you are a UK patient, we can liaise directly with your local hospital on your behalf to obtain your clinical information. If you are an international patient, we will ask you to send these documents securely, and electronically.

Any existing information you have about your diagnosis and previous treatments is extremely helpful. We encourage you to provide as much detail as possible in your initial enquiry. Your case will be reviewed by our Medical Director, and a consultant radiation oncologist who specialises in your type of cancer. Our Patient Services Manager will inform you of the outcome of your enquiry, or may request additional information if needed for the final decision.
