At Proton International London, our highly experienced consultant radiation oncologists have an international reputation for providing the highest quality of care to patients with lung cancer. They provide a first-class comprehensive service which includes proton beam therapy.

At Proton International London, we specialise in delivering private proton beam therapy for lung cancer. Proton beam therapy is an exact form of radiation treatment that can be used to treat lung cancer. It is delivered using a beam of proton radiation made of positively charged particles that can be targeted to the tumour with high accuracy. This allows doctors to deliver a high dose of radiation to the tumour while minimising the exposure of surrounding healthy tissue.

Proton International London is the first private proton beam therapy centre in London. Proton International London has a team of experienced radiation oncologists, physicists and radiographers dedicated to providing the highest quality proton beam therapy care to patients with lung cancer.

Treating lung cancer with proton beam therapy

Proton beam therapy for lung cancer is a precise form of radiation therapy that can accurately target tumours. This allows delivery of a high dose of radiation to the tumour while minimising the exposure of surrounding healthy tissues including healthy parts of the lung containing the tumour, the unaffected second lung, the heart and oesophagus. This can lead to fewer acute and late side effects, such as oesophagitis and radiation-induced heart disease, and helps to preserve lung function.

PBT is an excellent option for some lung cancer patients seeking an effective treatment with reduced side effects. The availability of PBT as a treatment is very limited around the world. Despite its scarce availability, because it effectively treats certain cancers, including lung cancer, with reduced side effects, it should be considered as a treatment option for lung cancer patients.

The benefits of PBT for treating lung cancer

Proton beam therapy (PBT) is a  form of targeted radiation therapy that uses high-energy protons to treat and destroy cancer cells in the lungs. It can deliver a high dose of radiation to the tumour while minimising the exposure of surrounding healthy tissue, which makes it a good option to be considered for lung cancer patients.

Here are some of the benefits of PBT for lung cancer

Precision: PBT can be precisely aimed and controlled to deliver a more targeted radiation dose to the tumour while minimising exposure to healthy lung tissue and nearby critical organs. This can help to reduce the risk of side effects, including radiation-induced heart disease and oesophagitis, and helps to preserve lung function.

Effectiveness: Proton beam therapy treatment is effective in treating lung cancer, with similar outcomes to standard photon radiotherapy, but better sparing of normal tissues with reduced acute and late toxicity.

Safety: PBT is a safe and well-tolerated treatment option with a low risk of severe side effects.

Cost: PBT is more expensive than traditional radiation therapy, but the reduced risk of side effects may offset the cost.

Improved Outcomes: Studies suggest that PBT can result in equivalent outcomes for lung cancer to standard photon radiotherapy, with a lower risk to surrounding tissue.

  • It was a truly wonderful experience, thank you ALL again. I am in your eternal debt for this.

    Rory Lyons
  • I came for proton beam for prostate cancer ending on 31.05.24. Yesterday I got the first PSA blood test check up results after the treatment and …. 0.35…. Dr Lester says ‘thats it nothing more to do, enjoy my life’. Just a simple PSA check every 6 months to make sure it stays low like that. What this means is that every single person at Proton International who touched my case got it 100% absolutely correct. Fantastic. Thank you so much.

  • Although I was very happy to get to the end of my treatment, I was genuinely sad to say goodbye to the team. Testament to the relationship we developed, we still exchange occasional messages. All in all, I could not have wished for a better experience during a very difficult time.

  • Throughout the entire process the care and attention to detail provided by the team was outstanding.
