Proton International London Expands Access to Private Proton Beam Therapy for Patients in Northern England

Proton International London, the UK’s only private proton beam therapy centre, is pleased to announce a new collaboration aimed at improving access to cancer treatment for patients in Northern England.

This milestone has been made possible through our partnership with Dr Rovel Colaco, a Consultant Clinical Oncologist based in Manchester.

What the collaboration means for private proton therapy patients

Proton International London has been at the forefront of proton beam therapy for many years, offering privately referred patients advanced cancer treatments in a professional, caring, and state-of-the-art environment.

Opened in 2022, our proton beam therapy unit at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) is one of only two centres in the UK and the only private facility. With over 30 years of experience treating patients with proton therapy in the USA through Proton International, we are excited to expand access to this cutting-edge treatment for patients in Northern England via referral with Dr Colaco.

About Dr Rovel Colaco

Dr Rovel Colaco, Consultant Clinical Oncologist in Manchester, is now working with Proton International London to refer private patients from Northern England to our London-based centre. His areas of expertise include:

  • Brain tumours – primary and metastatic
  • Proton beam therapy
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy for bone and spine metastases
  • Spine tumours
  • Central nervous system cancers

Dr Colaco was the first UK doctor to receive specialist proton beam therapy training. He spent a year at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute in Jacksonville, Florida and a further year training in stereotactic radiotherapy at Yale University in Connecticut. He brings extensive experience in this field, alongside a compassionate and patient-centred approach to treatment. He also chairs the Particle Therapy Co-operative Group (PTCOG) subcommittee for CNS, skull base and sarcoma tumours.

Benefits of Proton Beam Therapy

Proton beam therapy is an advanced form of radiotherapy that delivers a highly targeted dose of radiation to tumours using protons. This approach minimises damage to surrounding healthy tissue, making it particularly beneficial for:

  • Paediatric patients
  • Brain cancer patients
  • Head and neck patients
  • Prostate patients
  • Patients undergoing stereotactic radiosurgery

Compared to conventional radiation therapies, proton beam therapy significantly reduces side effects and helps improve patients’ quality of life, particularly those with complex cancers.

How our collaboration works with Dr Colaco

Dr Colaco will work closely with London-based Consultant Oncologist Dr Michael Kosmin at Proton International London. Together, they will ensure a seamless referral and treatment process for private patients from Northern England Dr Colaco will where possible participate in MDT meetings and planning of referred patient’s proton treatment in conjunction with Dr Kosmin.

Our priority is to enhance access to world-class proton beam therapy for private patients across the UK, ensuring that those in the North can benefit from the same expertise and cutting-edge treatments available at our London centre.
