Frequently asked questions about proton beam cancer treatment
What are the risks of radiotherapy?
Radiotherapy is a well-researched and widely used cancer treatment, backed by decades of clinical trials. However, because it works by damaging the DNA of cells, it can affect nearby healthy tissue, resulting in side effects. The NHS and other leading healthcare providers take great care to minimise these risks and provide comprehensive support to help manage any side effects.
Proton therapy can significantly reduce the risks of side effects by targeting tumours more precisely, limiting radiation exposure to healthy tissue.
How can I access proton beam therapy?
The treatment at Proton International London is available to insured and self-pay patients, both from the UK and abroad. The NHS refers several hundred patients each year for treatment at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester and to clinics abroad. To explore your suitability for PBT referral, discuss it with your care team and oncologist in the first instance. As a self-pay patient from the UK or abroad, you can contact us at Proton International London to request a consultation.
Will my insurance cover proton therapy?
We work with all major medical insurance providers, and many patients have their treatment covered. If you’ve been recommended proton beam therapy and have private health insurance, it’s important to check with your insurer to confirm that it’s included in your policy.
If you’d like help, our team is more than happy to speak with your insurer on your behalf. Just share your insurer’s name and your membership number, and we’ll take it from there.
